Restaurants in Kaliviani

For dining in Kaliviani you will find three good restaurants in the centre of the village. All of them serve traditional Cretan dishes and homemade wine and raki.

While you will arrive in Kaliviani, just 5 minutes drive away from the town of Kissamos, you will have the opportunity to choose from the three restaurants where you will taste the famous Cretan cuisine.

The first option is the restaurant Kaliviani. This restaurant at the tip of the cape Gramvousa or Gramboussa opened its doors on 1996 and from then on thousands of people have taste their unique dishes. With a breathtaking view to the Golf of Kissamos and a charmingly decorated yard, they will serve by offering you some of their specialities. Note that their menu will be updated during the summer of 2013, so do not miss to give a try, as their experience promises a good value of dining.

The second option is the restaurant Grambousa. This restaurant offer traditional Cretan dishes and beverages. The restaurant could not be renowned for its cuisine, were it not for its successful combination of the two most basic "ingredients" required for exqusitely tasty, yet simultaneously healthy cuisine: the purest ingredients of the cretan earth, and the traditional recipes, which date back to the 18th century.

The third option is the tavern Agarathos. The tavern located in Kaliviani in front of the tavern Gramboussa.
In the tavern you can enjoy the traditional Cretan cuisine, that Mr.Nikos and his family are able to offer. In the tavern the atmosphere reminiscent of something from the past and with people who cared to prepare for you a unique experience of simplocity and taste, with fresh vegetable, local meat and Cretan virgin olive oil of their own production.

How to get to Balos Lagoon

Balos Beach Lagoon become a very popular place the last years and visitors from all over the world want to know more about this unique beach in Crete.

There are two ways to get to balos beach, the one is from the land and the other is by the sea. Both of the ways are beautiful and easy, but if you choose to go by land, your starting point it will be the village of Kaliviani, just 10 minutes drive away from the town of Kissamos. A good option is to stay in Kaliviani the night before, having plenty of time next morning to take your breakfast and then start walking or driving the last 9 kilometres left to reach the balos beach. From the centre of the village kaliviani the first 1km is asphalt road, there is the point that you will meet a big sign which welcoming you to Gramvousa peninsula and inform you that after 200 metres you will be stopped by an employ who will ask you for a small fee (1euro per person) to enter to the peninsula and take the direction to balos beach. This small fee is for the workers who clean the beach and take off the rubbish.

From that point just continue all the way straight for 7 km more on a land but safe road. Most of the travellers they don't provide a four by four car but this is not a big problem, if you drive slowly and carefully you will be able to get until the end. On half way you will see on your right a small white chapel which called Agia Irini. After 50 metres from the chapel you will find a hidden ancient spring, fill up your bottles from there the water is excellent. keep driving or walking for 3 more km and you will arrive at the end of the road, a big parking area is available for your car and a canteen offer beverages and snacks.

From there 3 way paths are going on several routes, take the path in the middle and start to walk for the last 1,5 km before get to balos beach. A pair of climp shoes, a hat, and some water is recommended. As you are walking on the path after 5 minutes you will see from above of the Gramvousa peninsula the magnificent Balos Beach. The view from above is extremely beautiful, so don't stuck there, just continue walking down. At the beach you will find another canteen offering beverages and food and may some sun omprelas services.

Stay all day, enjoy that wonderful place and don't forget to bring your rubbish back, just keep the beach clean, as it deserves it. The whole of the trip it will take you about 40 minutes until the end of the road and 20 minute more to walk down on the beach. If you do it walking from Kaliviani, it takes about 3 hours until the beach.
